Description
Legendary western star of the first half of the 20th century Tom Mix is seen here on his horse Tony leading a parade down K Street and waving to his admirers. Movie studios often sent stars to promote their movies, which is the case here. The rag-tag assemblage of youthful fans escorting Mix provide a cross-section of costume and ethnicity, all of them thrilled to be in the presence of their screen idol. This photograph was taken in 1921, eleven years after Mix made his first screen appearance, and for a decade he was the highest-paid western star in film and Fox Studio's biggest draw. His style of showmanship set the standard for cowboy actors of the 1930s and 1940s and over three hundred films with his name at the top of the credits secure his position as the greatest western star of the silent screen. The following businesses along the parade route are as follows: the Wasserman-Gattman Company at 610 through 618 K Street, the Hotel Central at 522 K Street, and Breuner's Furniture at 600 through 608 K Street.
