Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. View 6: Photo taken aboard the French oil tanker "Ventose" in the South China Sea. The tanker was enroute from Indonesia to Japan when it rescued a boat full of Vietnamese refugees, or "Boat People." View is of Tuyet Thi Tran and her family. From left to right: Tuyet Thi Tran; Van-Quynh Pham, oldest daughter; Bao-Tram Pham, youngest daughter; and then husband, Hai-Nguyen Pham. Photo was taken by a French officer a few days after the refugees were rescued.
