Description
An Oct. 20, 1939, photograph reveals the front entrance to the auditorium of Grant Union High School. The auditorium held the school's prized pipe organ, an instrument whose quality and design was matched by those in only three other venues in the country: the old Fox Theater in San Francisco, the Paramount Theater in New York and the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The organ, which was built by Grant students, under the direction of Oakland organ maker Fred Wood, was destroyed in a December 1973 fire.
