Photograph caption reads: "A scene from the French Riviera? No, this is Southern California--Santa Monica to be exact--where temperatures in the 80s made it an ideal beach weekend. More than a million people packed the beaches from Topanga to Newport yesterday. Lifeguards said many of them were seeking respite from the heat after standing under the noonday sun in the Hands Across America chain". This Memorial Day photograph looks north towards Palisades Park and the Santa Monica mountains. The white, stepped building, top, is the Wilshire Palisades at 3200 Ocean Park Boulevard. A walkway passes over the Pacific Coast Highway connecting the park to the beach. Photograph dated: May 26, 1986.
