Description
The view captured on this postcard is just what folks cruising or walking southwest down K Street at night in 1957 would encounter from the corner of Tenth and K streets. Long-time resident business Walgreen Drugs at 930 K Street beams out from under the sign for the Hotel Land, located at 1106 Tenth Street. Heading downtown, buildings still lit for business on the left include Leed’s Shoes at 922, Grayson’s at 918, Capital Clothing at 916 and Don Burton Shoes at 914 K Street. The vertical sign and marquee for the Fox Senator Theatre at 912 K dominate the street’s signage with bold color lights advertising “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter” starring Jayne Mansfield in Cinemascope. Still visible beyond the Fox is a continuation of the K Street Clothiers including Montgomery Ward & Co. at 830, S.H. Kress and Co. at 818 and Zukor’s Women’s Clothing at 812 K Street. Across broad K Street signage for Green-Heyden Co. Inc. Shoes stands out and is flanked by the stop light at Tenth Street.
