Description
This September 9, 1895, photograph captures the gleam of the Grand Electric Carnival on K Street, between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Strings of lights hang from poles and crisscross K Street. The event was held to celebrate the unprecedented long distance transfer of electric power earlier that year from Folsom to Sacramento. Also unprecedented were the parade and carnival in that planners – Louis Breuner, T.B. Hale, and C.K. McClatchy – sought an undertaking that no other city could possibly duplicate. To the immediate right of the photograph is Hale Brothers department store while, beyond that, and in the middle of the photograph, is a sign for the Clunie Theater at 811 K Street.
