Barbacoas is a city in Nariño Department, located northwest of San Juan de Pasto, the department capital. Prior to European colonization, the area was home to several Indigenous groups who practiced mining. Spaniard Francisco de Praga y Zúñiga entered the area as part of Spanish colonization efforts and founded the city in 1600, where it continued to be an important mining center for gold, silver, platinum, and coal. The city remains an important mining center for Colombia. Tres hombres y dos mujeres trabajan usando un canal de minería en Barbacoas. Todos llevan gorro.
