Description
Pictured in circa 1960, at 1001 Second Street, is Walsh’s Tavern. At the time this photograph was taken, it was owned and operated by Denis J. Sweeney, a native of County Donegal, Ireland. The business operated until Sweeney’s death in 1965. The bar occupied what was the original home to the National Bank of D.O. Mills – D.O. standing for “Darius Ogden.” Also known as the Heywood Building, Mills moved his business to the relative safety of the “fire proof” building in 1865. The bank operated there ably until it was vacated in 1912 for a 250,000 dollar, solid granite structure on the northwest corner of Seventh and J Streets.
