Description
A photograph depicting “Folsom potatoes,” rocks left behind following mining activity. These rocks found frequent use as ballast, stabilizing ships returning to San Francisco after they offloaded their cargo in Sacramento. Once the ships arrived in San Francisco, they sold the stones as paving materials to prevent the roads from becoming impassible due to mud during rainy periods. Folsom also shipped these stones by the ton to San Francisco via the Sacramento Valley Railroad
