Charles Handy thought for the day on the selection of Britain's Prime Ministers, how it differs from the corporate environment, and what roles leaders should play. Handy begins the article explaining how Prime Ministers are selected in Britain, and how the process of choosing leaders differs in the business world, where leaders are often not selected by the consent of the organization and thus end up at odds with colleagues when they boss others around instead of being leaders. Handy thus concludes that playing God in this way is not the ideal approach, and that managers and leaders should operate according to a trinity test: understanding what employees are, having a vision of what they might be, and bringing inspiration to lift them from one to the other.
