Description
WALSH, William J. 810 Washington Street, Santa Clara, 296-1410. Mr. Walsh is a native, born before the turn of the century, who has worked in the PM Mill as a cabinet-maker and for himself as a shoemaker. August 14, 1974. St. Joseph’s School. Prune picking. Residence with parents in adulthood. The PM Mill in 1905: size, number of employees, products, the coffin department, the cabinet department, starting wages, salary increases, standard and special order work, machines. Santa Clara (1900’s): businesses on Franklin Street, recreations. Education: St. Claire’s, Santa Clara High. The Earthquake: consequent damage to PM Mill. World War I. Prohibition. Businesses: leading businesses, the business district’s physical condition. The Depression: the bank holiday. World War II. Postwar growth. Small town atmosphere. Election campaigns (pre-Fifties). Early automobiles: the first car (1900), early cars, popular reactions to the first cars, growing use of the auto. Urban renewal. Break-up of the old neighborhoods after World War II. Ethnic prejudice. Length—48 minutes.
