Description
A mother and her two daughters are pictured inside a church, probably for the elder girl's communion. The mother stands at a wooden prie-dieu with red upholstery. She wears a long black dress with ruched edges and a train. Over the dress is a black transparent mantelet trimmed in black ribbon and ruffles. She wears yellow gloves and a white lace bonnet lined and trimmed with blue green. Two blue green ribbons band the body trimmed with small flowers and leaves at the top. A wide green ribbon secures the bonnet underneath her chin. A Bible or prayer book rests on the prie-dieu and the woman raises her hand gracefully as if to cross herself. Standing on the right is the older daughter who is dressed in white for her First Communion. She wears a simple double-layered white dress cinched tightly at the waist. The dress has a jewel neckline and plain long sleeves with narrow ruffles edging both. Her head is covered by a long white veil that falls behind her. She carries a white prayer book in one hand and a tall candlestick with a lit white candle in the other. The youngest daughter is dressed in a white bodice and a pink, white, and black bias plaid full pleated skirt. She wears white pantalettes edged with lace. She wears brown shoes, fingerless netted mitts, and a straw bonnet trimmed and tied with white bows.
