Photograph was edited for publication purposes. The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, located at 3939 S. Figueroa Street, was officially opened on July 4, 1959 by then Vice President Richard M. Nixon and was designed by Welton Becket; general contractor was L.E. Dixon Company. The last event at the arena was a Bruce Springsteen concert. The arena was closed on March 19, 2016 and demolished to make room for a new soccer stadium. Photograph caption dated January 8, 1965 reads "Defense-minded Bill Russell of Boston Celtics blocks another shot, this one from Lakers' Darral [sic] Imhoff in first period of last night's Laker game won by Celts, 112-104. Other players, (from left) are Bostons [sic] Tom Sanders, and Jerry West and Elgin Baylor of Los Angeles." The game was held at the Sports Arena.
