Description
This postcard, marked “Dredger No. 1” depicts an image of an early river dredger. Dredging in the Sacramento River was a common sight in Sacramento County from 1900 to the 1940s. A search for gold through dredging the river was commonly conducted by private permit, whereas the Army Corps of Engineers were usually responsible for other river-dredging tasks, such as levee widening, or channel digging.
