Description
Packed by Herbert Packing Co. Inc., San Jose - Reedley, California. "None But the Best". George N. Herbert was born in Solano County, California in 1870. His father William moved the family to Santa Clara County for the better educational opportunities available here and purchased orchard land. In 1890 George began operating a fruit packing and drying business in the family orchard. In 1892 he built a packing house at Lincoln and Home Streets in San Jose. George Herbert built a new one story packing plant on the corner of Lincoln and Moorpark in 1898. This plant burned to the ground but was rapidly rebuilt in the summer of 1901. The capacity of that factory was over 100 tons of fruit a day. The George N. Herbert Company was purchased by the California Prune & Apricot Growers Association in 1918.
