Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated April 3, 1944 reads, "Defense attorney Jerry Giesler is to make his argument for Chaplin, shown sitting behind him. Prosecutor Carr and defense attorney Giesler were each given two hours and a half for arguments."
