Seattle compound loading redwood log by means of gin pole. The original choker is left on the log brought in by yarding engine. Another choker which is permanent on loading line is attached to other end of log which is lifted bodily in air on car. When log is loaded the first choker is taken off and sent back to woods on main line. Five men on loading crew. Gin poles did away with landings which cost $200 apiece. Gin poles cost much less. Advantages of the gin pole method of loading (1) Much less expense than building of landing which costs $350 to $450 (2) Does not need men to keep mud cleared off landing. Hammond Lumber Company.
