Description
Image of a firefighter's certificate of service in the Boston Fire Department from the City of Boston made out in manuscript to Amasa Pray and dated March 4, 1846, with a central image of an eye-level view of the Old State House in Boston, Massachusetts, on fire with smoke coming out of the windows and firefighters in and around the building with hoses, ladders, and manual fire engines, while spectators watch from the street and surrounding buildings; the image depicts the November 21, 1832, fire that seriously damaged the Old Massachusetts State House (then serving as city hall of Boston); with an image of the seal of the City of Boston at bottom center showing the city as seen from the harbor with boats in the foreground.
"Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1833 by Thomas C. Amory in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts."--text, bottom center margin. "Salmon, Pinxt."--text, lower left margin. "Pendelton, direxit,_Boston."--text, lower center margin. "Eddy, Sculpt."--text, lower right margin. "City of Boston : This certifies that Amasa Pray having served for seven successive years in the Fire Department of the City of Boston is entitled to all the legal immunities consequent thereon. Given under my hand this 4th day of March A.D. 1846 H F McCleary, City Clerk. Josiah Quincy Jr. Mayor."--text of certificate, printed and handwritten.
