Title supplied by cataloger. The Hollywood Hotel began as a small stucco structure comprised of a 40-room wing which was built in 1902 by H.J. Whitley, a very successful land developer (later nicknamed "The Father of Hollywood"). Over the next three years, Whitley added an additional 104 rooms to a new wing of the elegant hotel, along with a wide lobby, a chapel, a music room, a ballroom, and wide lawns and carefully cultivated gardens were added, which stretched over three acres. The establishment operated as a resort hotel that would turn out to lure producers, directors, writers, technicians, as well as a continuous stream of idols of the silver screen, making this "the" place to be seen. Sadly, by the 1950s the hotel was run down and faded, becoming only a relic of its former glory, and in August 1956, the famous Hollywood Hotel was razed to make way for a $10,000,000 development, with a 12-story office building for the First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Hollywood, a shopping center, and parking lots. In 2001, the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex opened on the site of the former Hollywood Hotel.; Topped by a tower decorated with sculptures in arched niches and a flagpole, First National Bank was designed in Art Deco/Gothic style by architects Meyer and Holler of the Milwaukee Building Company. Aerial view of Hollywood Boulevard, looking to the east from the Chinese Theatre. Also visible are, left to right, the Hollywood Hotel, the First National Bank of Los Angeles, Hollywood Branch, on the northeast corner of Highland and Hollywood Blvd, and the Barker Bros. Hollywood.
