Title supplied by cataloger. Eastland Center was designed by architect Albert C. Martin and opened in the fall of 1957 as an outdoor mall along the San Bernardino Freeway (10). The mall was unique at the time, as it had a regular mall on the upper level, and a strip center on the lower level facing the freeway. It opened with a 5-level May Company on the east end of the mall and a 2-level W.T. Grant on the west end. W.T. Grant closed in 1976 and was converted into shops on the upper level. The mall closed and expanded in 1979. Mervyns was added on to the west end of the mall in the 1980s. In the early 1990s May closed its Eastland Center location and the area stood empty for years. In 1997 the upper level of the mall was permanently closed and the ex-May location was torn down. Local shops now occupy the area. Aerial view of Eastland Center located at 112 Plaza Drive in West Covina; view is looking northeast. The mall stands north of the San Bernardino Freeway (10), seen diagonally lower left to top right, between Barranca Avenue (upper right to upper left), Citrus Street (lower left corner), and Workman Avenue (middle left to upper right).
