Description
In August of 1988 children ages 9 to 13 were invited to enroll in a summer camp at Headlands Center for the Arts. The environment of the Marin Headlands, 13,000 acres of open, coastal wilderness became the back drop and resource for the uniquely designed program that blended art-making with the natural environment. The program involved working directly with Bay Area artists, hiking the trails, and exploring natural science workshops with visiting naturalists who discussed various aspects of wildlife, flora, and coastal ecology. The focus of the summer camp was to enhance the children’s own creative abilities as well as provide them with a unique exploration of the Headlands through each artist’s perspective. The Bay Area artists involved were Tim Collins, Joanna Haigood, Keith Hennessey, Melissa Kwasny, Marcia, Miget, and Jim Paul. The second part of this footage shows Bay Area artist, Joanna Haigood, an alum of the Center’s program, performing a piece in Headlands Center for the Arts’s gymnasium. Haigood’s work focused on the exploration of three dimensional and aerial movement. During the camp, Haigood explored movement and gymnastics and its relation to the environment.
