Description
This photograph was taken in circa 1970 from a point just to the east of the intersection of K and Eighth Street. It reveals a reflection pool and several pedestrians. To the right of the picture and in the distance are Weinstocks and, beyond that, the Ochsler Building. The K Street Mall was built in 1969 by A. Teichert and Son. Its designers viewed the plan as revolutionary – it would be an interactive mall, prompting pedestrians to engage the shapes, water, and tiled panes that would come to characterize it. However, in time, the mixture of water features and concrete obelisks, also referred to as “tank traps,” became very unpopular with several community members. They were thought by some to be drab, cluttering, and out of scale. By 1978, plans were put into motion to revamp the Mall.
