Description
Shown above is an issue of The Home Designer. Established by architect Walter W. Dixon (1884-1953) and German-born builder R.C. Hillen (1883-1955) in June 1921, the Oakland-based, monthly publication sought to increase the “interest of the average home owner in his home to improve the style of architecture, the furnishings and the garden.” Although concentrating primarily on California style concepts, the everyman appeal of the magazine went nationwide; so much so that Dixon and Hillen, in 1922, printed a special edition for Miami, Florida, homes. A subscription for The Home Designer ran at a cost of two dollars and 50 cents a year, and was printed out of 1844 Fifth Avenue in Oakland, California.
