This is side B of the first tape, from the day one, of the annual Drucker Symposium of 1981. The topic of the day is “What do We Know About Productivity?” Dale Zand is the moderator and Robert Hawkins is the panelist. In this recording Peter Drucker finishes up his talk and Robert Hawkins speaks. Hawkins discusses different ways to measure productivity and how it can be imperfect and sometimes misleading. He also discusses the impacts of an increase in women, youth, and the aged in the labor force on growth and productivity. Robert discusses other possible reasons for the worldwide decline in productivity, such as demographic shifts, regulations, industry shifts, and crisis in managerial decision making. After Hawkins finishes, Peter Drucker has the opportunity to respond to his comments. The end of the tape begins the question and answer period.
