Description
Press release published by the War Relocation Authority about statistics of Japanese Americans serving in the armed services. Approximately 12,000 Japanese Americans were serving in active duty, more than half from outside continental United States (Hawaii), 5000 volunteers, 1,300 from incarceration camps, several hundred Japanese American girls in the WAC and the Nurses' Corps, and 200 men in the merchant Marines. Includes information about 100th Battalion and campaign in Italy and Army Language School at Camp Savage, Minnesota. Most Japanese American soldiers to go Camp Shelby in Mississippi for special combat training. The War Relocation Authority (WRA), together with the Wartime Civil Control Administration (WCCA), the Civil Affairs Division (CAD) and the Office of the Commanding General (OFG) of the Western Defense Command (WDC) operated together to segregate and house some 110,000 men women and children from 1942 to 1945. The collection contains documents and photographs relating to the establishment and administrative workings of the (WDC), the (WRA) and the (WCCA) for the year 1942.
