Description
Taken on November 14, 1939, this photograph shows the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 1017 11th St. Several period cars are parked on 11th Street. Designed after Paris’s Church of the Holy Trinity and the passion of Bishop Patrick Manogue, the Cathedral was built between 1886 and 1889. Its superstructure was composed of redwood beams and cast iron pillars, with a shell of locally produced brick and plaster. When at capacity, the nave could seat 1,700 worshippers in pine and redwood pews. The main steeple reaches 216 feet and each flanking steeple measures 120 feet high. The rectory, built in 1924, sits to the left of the church. Harold Shay Florists at 1015 11th St. is visible to the lower left of the photograph.
