The MGM actress was officially splitting from Franchot Tone whose penchant for late night partying conflicted with her work schedule. Crawford relunctantly appeared in court after the judge refused to grant an interlocutory divorce based only on depositions.
Photograph caption dated April 11, 1939 reads, "'He said he wasn't the marrying kind and wanted his freedom.'"
