In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. A, leaf 30.
Corner view of a large brick block-sized building with 2 chimneys on its short side and 9 on its long side; an awning covers street level all around the building; on short side awning "John Hatch Jeweler" is written at the corner; in front of long side is a flag pole with a flag which says "Post Office Literary Depot"; at the end on the long side "Post Office" is identified on the awning; next door on long side is a 2 story building with "Theater" identified above 2nd floor; horseback riders, horse-drawn carriages and people can be seen ; on right men are pulling a wagon with a rope.
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
"This picture represents the first permanent building of the U.S. Postoffice as it appeared in 'Sacramento Illustrated' of 1855...The post-office was located here for a few years, from about 1853 on through 1855, when it was moved to the Northwest corner of 4th & Kay street, where it remained until about 1892.The building on 3rd street still stands to-day, although it has been re-modled by the owners, 'Quong Sang Chong Co.', a chinese whole-sale produce company..."
