Born as George Herman Ruth, Jr., "The Bambino" was a Major League baseball player from 1914 to 1935. He began his successful career as a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, then went on to spend most of his career as an outfielder with the New York Yankees. He spent his final season with the Boston Braves. Known as the first player to ever hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), a record which he held for 34 years until it was broken by Roger Maris in 1961. He also held the record for the total number of lifetime home runs, 714, until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974. A victim of cancer, "The Bambino" died in August of 1948 and was buried in Hawthorne, New York at the Cemetery of the Gate of Heaven.
