Description
Photograph of Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, showing tile chimney and outer court from roof, ca.1888. "Ruin of front corridor in 1887 showing type of tile roof used in mission days -- tiles placed on matting of carrizo or native rushes sustained by aliso or sycamore poles and huge vigas or beams resting on adobe gables. The corridor roof was of concrete on closely grouped beams and collapsed as the beams rotted away. Taken in the year after the progressive Padre Mut's departure."
