Connie and Allan begin the interview discussing the book’s context and its message of survival, how people carry on in spite of life’s shortcomings, and how the character identities formed. They proceed to talk about American slavery and how Allan was able to enter into the master and slave characters and humanize their struggles before moving on to discuss the influence of John Cheever on Allan and Allan’s current teaching career.
