Description
1989-1159. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. B, leaf 6. In the foreground is a railroad engine; a partial view of the car behind it is also included; a man inside the engine is seen and a second man stands on the side of the engine; behind the engine a dirt street proceeds into the distance; on both sides of the street are wooden buildings; on the left side is J & P Carolan on a sign and above the building another sign says "Hardware"; on the right side a large building has printed on its side "Brannan" Also have negative: no. #28,715 (4 x 5 in.) Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "'A.A.Sargeant'#7...'Wood-burner'....J.& P. Carolan building, erected March, 1851. To the right, Old Jones Hotel, later called Brannan House, 'afterwards named 'Freemont Hotel' and was known far and wide." Reproduction of original (possibly a Alfred A. Hart image) probably made in 1930's.
