Description
Avalon--Visitors who have known Catalina over the years may rub their eyes in disbelief to behold eight booted and sombreroed musicians surrounded by admiring throngs, as they sing and play the lilting Latin American favorites, just like strolling troubadours of yesteryear. "Los Cameros", one of Mexico's finest Mariachi bands, has been engaged for the Summer season with funds subscribed by enthusiastic citizens. In the best Catalina tradition, the Mariachi perform wherever and whenever the spirit moves them about the downtown streets of Avalon. The Mariachis are a part of a growing movement to restore the color and the magic which has made Santa Catalina Island and its intriguing port city of Avalon famous for half a century. Photo dated: July 1, 1961.
