Description
Photograph of paddle wheel showboat on the Mississippi river, ca.1850-1860. At center, a large double-deck showboat is seen moving across a wide river. On the lower platform of the boat, four figures are barely visible. The individual on the far left of the lower deck is seen waving. Tall columns border the left and right sides of the lower deck, but the edges of the platform near where the individuals stand remains uncovered. Above the individuals, a symmetrical wave pattern above a small fence lining can be seen decorating the sides of the showboat. On the top level of the boat, a small crowd stands bunched near the square navigation compartment. In the background, two tall, parallel pipes reach far above the top of the ship. Clouds of black smoke can be seen coming from these pipes. In the extreme background, part of a ship is seen on the water's edge standing near trees and heavy vegetation. In the background to the right, a hill covered with vegetation is visible. In the foreground near the bottom-left, a group of people stand on the water's edge and wave towards the boat. In the extreme foreground on the left, a crowd of people are seen leaning against the railing of a wooden bridge. Several people in the crowd appear to be waving at the boat as well
