Connie and Amy begin the interview discussing the characters’ lives in San Francisco, and how there are many secrets among them. They go on to discuss the title and who the “Kitchen God” actually is, and the status of women and girls in China vs. the West, before returning to the book’s characters and their reflection of Amy. Connie and Amy proceed to talk about Amy’s mother’s reception of the book, and the feature of sexual assault in the book. Amy goes on to discuss her Chinese sisters and her meeting them for the first time, and the cultural differences between China and the United States, before talking about some of her vacillation in starting the book and its importance to her mother.
