V1p265d In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 265 bottom. This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Text written under photo: "Soldierettes in training at the Presidio 1916." Photo shows officer instructing female recruits on flag signaling. Wooden buildings visible in the background. Soldierettes were at the Presidio attending National Service School, a program set up by the Women's Section of the Navy League to increase the preparedness of women for war. The course included first aid, elementary hygiene, home care of the sick, marching and drilling. Students were being trained to support the Armed Forces.
