Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated November 7, 1956 reads "Part of shipment of 500 new toys for Christmas distribution are presented Col. C. J. Stadler, left, Marine Corps Toys for Tots representative, by Gerald Block of Builders Emporium. Toys will be distributed to needy children in December as part of Corps community service program."
