Description
This photograph was taken just before a San Jose relay race between the Garden City Wheelmen and the Sanson Wheelmen of Stockton in 1919. The gentlemen in suits are (from left to right) Red Smith, Trainer of Garden City Wheelmen; George F. Lucier, President and Manager of the Garden City Wheelmen; H. Wallace, Trainer for the Sanson Wheelmen. The riders are (from left to right) Charles Barclay, George Veit, Gene Mathewson, George Jetter, Clyde Arbuckle, Dave Wynne, Charles Flint, Glenn Neville, George Elliott, Ralph Brown, R. Negrette, Ed Williams, Roy Magnuson, H. Armbrust, Ed Schingler, A. Hornor, V.C. Cassilis, M. Cassilis, H.R. Hornor, and Walter Jones. San Jose and its surrounding communities supported four bicycling clubs by the early 1900s. The Garden City Wheelmen began as the Garden City Cyclers in the l890s with their own clubhouse in downtown San Jose. The club organized races and rides throughout the Bay Area, and hosted picnics, dinners, and other outings for members.
