The International House of Pancakes was founded in 1958 by Al Lapin, Jr. with the first restaurant opening in Toluca Lake, California. In November 2001 the company opened its 1000th location in Layton, Utah. Since its original opening, more than 1200 restaurants have opened throughout the United States and Canada, with more than 90% of IHOP restaurants operating as franchises. IHOP has officially phased out use of the original name, International House of Pancakes, but the familiar blue roof remains. In this photo, the IHOP located at 3165 6th street, east of Vermont, shows a large "Open 24" sign near the top of the roof, and a row of newspaper vending machines lined along the front entrance. Photo dated: November 8, 2005.
