Description
The facade of the Southern Pacific Railroad Station, located at 401 I Street, was captured in this circa 1940 photograph. Opened in 1926, the 370 by 100 foot station was considered one of the finest of its kind. One of the unique features of the station was its subway system which allowed customers underground access to their trains without having to cross intervening tracks. This meant hard work with excavation through sand that had been dredged in to fill the site's previous resident China Slough, not to the mention the Slough's own blue clay. Parked in front of the station is the Budweiser Beer wagon with Clydesdale horses.
