A mysterious source of subterranean heat is causing warm air to rise through an earth "crack" in the land fault at Point Fermin, revealed today by investigating engineers and geologists. Guy D. Donald, district city engineer of San Pedro, is pictured holding his hand over one of two vents in the earth through which the warm air streams and on cold mornings, vaporizes, appearing like steam. The land at the left is stationary, while that at right is moving seaward and downward between 1 1/2 and 3 inches a month, causing what is commonly called the "Sunken City." Photo dated: March 2, 1932.
