Yoshihiro Uchida, Judo coach of San Jose State University Judo team for over 60 years. The Spartan Complex West building was renamed Yoshihiro Uchida Hall in 1997 in his honor. Yoshihiro Uchida (Yosh Uchida) was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, received the Tower Award from San Jose State, had a building named after him (Uchida Yoshihiro Hall) and was bestowed the highest honor the Emperor of Japan can give a non-citizen, 'The Order of the Sacred Treasure.' Yoshihiro Uchida went on to persuade the Amateur Athletic Union to accept judo as a sport in 1953 and San Jose State College sponsored the first nationwide AAU championships that year. Champion Team. The main returning champion from last year is Ben Campbell defending Northern California Champion. The Nationals were held in the Spartan Gym on April 10th and 11th. These matches were watched by people all over the nation. Promising newcomers were Hatae in the 180 class and Watenabe in the 150 class.
