Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated July 17, 1962 partially reads, "A Van Nuys man is in jail today on suspicion of stabbing his wife to death with a homemade butcher knife. Mack Stewart, 50, 14641 Vose St. called police Sunday night and, according to Det. Sgt. W. K. Thurston, told them: 'I just stabbed my wife. Come and get me.' Police found the body of Mrs. Ethel Mae Stewart, 52, clad in a nightgown and sprawled on a couch. Detectives said that she had been stabbed once in the upper left chest with a 12-inch blade Stewart was said to have made from a file. Stewart told officers his wife fell asleep on a couch while they were watching television. He then went into the kitchen to get a glass of milk, detectives said, and returned with the butcher knife and stabbed his wife to death as she slept. Then he called the police. 'I don't know why I did it,' Stevens [sic] told police."
