Description
On back: "West side of Market St. between Santa Clara and El Dorado [now Post] ca. 1860. Local militia company doing drill in street." Small unit of troops assembled in a dirt street, with flag and drummer at the front. A small number of people have gathered to watch. Businesses along the right side include a hotel and restaurant, Empire Market, H. Hyman San Francisco Store, furniture store, Hotel France, and possibly a barber. A windmill is at the far end of the street on a wooden scaffolding.
