A portrait of the cultural inventory of a Catholic church in Chajul. The unidentified religious statue on the left of the image is dressed in military uniform. The previous day, the statues were dressed in guerilla clothing when the town was controlled by the guerillas. In 1980, the Catholic Church had to pull out of the Quiché Department, where Chajul is located, after three priests and dozens of lay catechists were killed. The church was used as a military base toward the end of 1980. Even the saints were dressed as soldiers. Catholic workers did not return to the region until late 1984. El día anterior, las estatuas estaban vestidas con ropas de guerrillero cuando el pueblo estaba controlado por la guerrilla. En 1980, la iglesia católica tuvo que retirarse del Departamento de El Quiché, donde se encuentra Chajul, después de el asesinato de tres sacerdotes y decenas de catequistas laicos.
