Photograph caption dated June 16, 1962 reads "Jeff Byars, 17, receives the Scout Merit Award for Life Saving of Burbank Explorer Post 49 from Ralph Bachtel, Burbank district Scout commissioner. Byars, a graduating senior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, was honored for saving the life of a 6-year-old boy while traveling through Texas last summer. Byars, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Byars, pulled the child, who had stopped breathing from a swimming pool and administered artificial respiration."
