Description
Burt Boyar discusses the life of his friend Sammy Davis Jr. and talks about Davis’s autobiography, “Sammy.” Boyar describes how he and his late wife Jane decided to contribute new material to “Sammy” after the death of their long-time friend. Boyar begins by talking about Davis’s friendships with Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Mickey Rooney, and Michael Jackson. Boyar discusses how he met Davis while he was writing musical reviews in New York and the two became inseparable since. He talks about Davis’ interracial marriage in the 1960s and how he had to postpone his wedding because of John Kennedy’s Presidential inauguration. He discusses Davis’ role in the civil rights movement, and the controversies he faced being an African American performer. Boyar ends the interview by describing Davis’ illnesses late in life and how he converted to Judaism.
