Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes and has vertical creases.
Paul Behrmann was the former manager of Anne Nichols, author of the popular play, "Abie's Irish Rose." In 1947, Behrmann was charged with taking $10,000 from a Mrs. Wanda Schoemann who assumed the money was going to help Nichols. He was also charged with stealing $10,000 from the author, withdrawn from her bank account without her permission. Nichols testified that she was solvent and had no need to arrange for a loan from anyone. Behrmann was convicted. In 1949, while appealing that conviction, Behrmann was questioned by federal agents about his involvement with gangsters, including Mickey Cohen. They were concerned about leaks of official police documents, especially transcripts of conversations gained by bugging the home of Mickey Cohen. The government was planning a crackdown on mobsters in Los Angeles.
Photograph caption dated October 24, 1947 reads "Accuses agent of taking $10,000 from her."
