Description
Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway Engine No. 4, and passenger car, on the way to the summit of Mt. Tamalpais. The ride up took an hour and 10 minutes, and the fare was $1 round trip from Mill Valley or $1.40 from San Francisco. The orientation of the passengers and engineer indicate the way in which the Railway's engine would push passenger cars up the mountain, thereby avoiding the possibility of runaway cars, and limiting smoke and soot in the direction of passengers.
