Presidential candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara hugs his running mate Ramiro Ponce Monroy in front of a crowd of people at a campaign rally in Guatemala City. Many in the crowd are holding banners and posters in support of his candidacy. On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
